Fiona Paxton

mam for gave that Fiona Paxton copper necklace
[Fiona Paxton copper hued necklace over my E. V. Day ADAM x Whitney Museum Tee]

Fiona Paxton was one of those jewelry designers who caught my eye immediately a couple of years ago. Her pieces seemed so refreshing yet very familiar in a Native American wampum belt sort of way. Loom beading turned into another form of wearable art. Cascading chains... heavy duty heirloom yet these necklaces are so delicate I am honestly scared to over wear (or wear at all). A lot of lookalikes out there too but none seemed to feel quite right.

PS, yes sadly much too delicate to ever wear or even display.

Hi : Low - Proenza Schouler PS1 vs. Country Road Iris

Country Road Black Iris Bag
Proenza Schouler PS1 Barney's NY

Those in Australia have all the luck (and maybe everyone else will too thanks to ebay and a few crafty folks?) with their very own Country Road stores churning out a major Proenza Schouler PS1 lookalike... the Black Iris Leather Satchel, $249. (AUD) The PS1 as you know runs around $1,995.00 (USD). Totally unisex the original PS1 has been the "it" bag of this and last year (making the chance someone you know has been salivating over it high) in an ever shrinking pool of care, along with Alexander Wang's studded duffel. Take note at how he's heavily (ahem!) influencing their other bags as well. Can someone hook me up with Iris or would you say that's too taboo?

Bilbao Tote by Issey Miyake + Pleats Please : Takashimaya

Bilbao Tote by Issey Miyake + Pleats Please

Showing some things can be both good and old I found Issey Miyake's original delicious Bilbao tote bag online at Takashimaya NYC, $395. A hit at MOMA's gift shop a few years back, things like this transcend the accessory category... this is wearable art to the 9th degree. The new version via Estella NYC, with it's much smaller panels and lackluster generic shape shows that some things are better left well enough alone. For all those Star Wars and R. Buckminster Fuller aficionados, this is it.

Hella Jongerius + IKEA + UNICEF = Whimsical PS Series

Hella Jongerius IKEA UNICEF PS Series
Hella Jongerius + IKEA + UNICEF = Whimsical PS Series

I absolutely adore these latest offerings from designer Hella Jongerius for IKEA's latest PS Series (see Jongerius' past pieces for them here) featuring traditional Swedish fairy tales transferred to whimsical wall hangings. Patched together using a flux of materials such as printed cottons and wool felt are the characters Gullspira (goat), Pelle (rabbit), and Mikkel (fox). Even better this collection also teams up with UNICEF with the pieces being constructed by women in small Indian villages. Along with Jongerius' signature, each piece is also signed by the actual woman crafting it. The collection will be available in select IKEA stores this summer, 2009.

Vanilla Salt : Halen Môn : Classics Remastered

Halen Mon Vanilla Sea Salt " Kicking Off 30 Days of Classics Remastered ... A Housewarming Idea"
For the past couple of months, likely thanks to one too many William Powell flicks, I've been turning back to the classics when it comes to social gifts. Suddenly they fail to seem so stodgy after all, all those cocktail shakers, monograms and engravings. The trick is to find either the very retro or a form so new that it almost tricks the mind.

Kicking off this new devotion for the rest of this years giving is something I've been meaning to post here for some time... the housewarming gift... salt. Well, really part 1 of 3 as the traditional triage is salt, bread and a broom. Pure luxuries back in ancient times and, as anyone accustom to freshly baked bread knows, still incredibly luxurious.

When it comes to luxury class salt I think I've found it in the form of Tahitian vanilla infused sea salt by Welsh organic Fleur de Sel extraordinaire Halen Môn. For those of you not in the NYC area you can order it online for $14.00 here at Chelsea Market Basket or pay them a visit on 75 Ninth Avenue. The little brown canister is simply darling and perfectly giveable as is not to mention Halen Môn is known for making extraordinary salts.

The question begging to be asked, why vanilla salt? Probably because it sounds so much like an oxymoron and what's the likelihood someone else will be giving it, aye!? On the other hand this can be a perfect DIY project by splitting a vanilla bean and mixing the paste with pure sea salt crystals. Store in a sack or give in a little tin and away you go. Make decent sized batches and give them out during the holidays. Become Madam or Mr. Fleur de Sel Vanille. These salts really are perfect for so many things including on the rim of cocktails (think Margarita's and Hot Buttered Rum), sprinkled on top of caramels and chocolate bon bon's, used in my little pink popcorn recipe or on top of Crêpe's. Lobster and butters have been bandied about as well but try sweet little neck clams and white wine.

Insider Tips To Surviving Wedding Gift Season

Heather Collins Groff’s Graphics Breanna Couture Embellished Boxed Wedding Invitation
Invitations we wouldn't mind getting: by Groff’s Graphics

Simply Put... How Not To Go Broke This Wedding Season

Do you find yourself cringing every time a new, highly decorated piece of mail files through your letter box? Is your calender starting to look more and more like a war field peppered with landmines? Are you feeling a tad Grinchy? If so you are far from alone. The once happy prospects of the traditional wedding season has taken on tones of a more ominous nature. This is because so many in the past have simply failed at being fun and people are starting to question why in the world they should have to pay for having a bad time? You have a point there but here at Gave That we tend to think about all of the delightful weddings over the yearshow fun they were, touching, swoon worthyand smile with how we have a backdoor way of doing things. Yes, there is a wild card to play.

"In 2008 an overwhelming number of those who took our poll said they would probably have to decline a wedding invitation due to an inability to afford gifts."

First, chances are your stack is a little less towering this year as there have been reports that weddings as a whole are down and, as can be seen by this delicious example via Coco+Kelley, many weddings have started to feel incredibly fun and intimate once again with all that needless showing off taken out of the picture. Along with these revelations there are ways to come through and celebrate a new marriage without going broke in the process or having to hide out for the rest of the year. Here's how:

Be Strategic, Should You Go or Sit It Out?

Being strategic and making plans beforehand is extremely important. Chances are even before the invitation hit the mail you knew from your friend, relative, loved one that they are going to be getting married soon. This is your notice to get ready and make plans (i.e. save up if you need to.) It's the out of the blue invitations that should have you asking yourself, is this something I need to do?

You have probably already heard the tongue in check yet sage advice that a person should bend over backwards for two types of people in their life: those who have been incredibly dear friends and those who are in a position to do something for you (think mentor, bosses, etc.). These are the people most deserving of your time and presence if possible. Try not to snub these events in favor of another wedding because it's your new boyfriends cousin whom you've never met or a so called relative who has never been a part of your life magically reappears.

Make a list and separate each wedding into a must go category and an I'll pass category. This will be something very personal and based on your finances and inclinations. Try not to let relatives interfere with your decisions.* Also consider only going to the religious service but not the reception so you're not obligated to pay for your plate or a bar tab and then send a gift later on. If declining make sure to do so or send your RSVP ASAP. This in itself can be considered a huge gift.

Set A Budget

Once you have your list of weddings that you're going to attend and decline think about a budget for all of the events collectively and do not deviate if at all possible. Divide and place in separate envelopes or put on gift cards the amount you will be spending on each wedding. Only spend that amount. Then ask yourself, for the weddings you decline will you be sending a gift? This is traditionally a very nice gesture and no your gift need not be from a registry. For the wedding(s) you will be going to you'll need to factor in travel, accommodations, what you'll be wearing and your gifts.

Saving On Your Wardrobe

We already covered this in the past in How To Be Social Without Going Broke. Tips include freeing yourself from the feeling you need to run out and buy new duds for each wedding. Dresses and suits that might end up being worn only once usually make poor use of cash. Instead think about getting one of those convertible dresses, like this one from Victoria's Secret, that can be worn numerous ways or buy a suit and have it tailored, changing it up with various ties, pocket squares and cuff links. Online sample sales are perfect aids as well. Remember that unless you're a member of the immediate family the chances of your picture being repeatedly taken are rather low. Few are going to notice you're wearing the same shoes or using the same clutch and if they do tell them it's your signature piece.

Saving On Gift Expenses

When it comes down to it Gave That is about giving and gifts so let's zero in and share the insider secrets on getting through this aspect of the wedding season which, in some cases, can end up being the most expensive. Firstly, wedding registries are not a part of proper historical etiquette. This is something manufactured and capitalized on by various retailers to funnel money into their company exclusively. Any bride or groom attempting to force guests into giving through one, especially now, is being unreasonable unless they know everyone extremely well and there is an understanding of some sort.

With that out of the way, one of the newest cache of savvy gift finds have been online private sample sales. Yes, I know this sounds strange as visions of cut tags and defaced, half broken merchandise runs through ones mind. That was the olden days. The online sample sales of today are all about liquidating, as quietly as possible, luxury goods that are simply backed up in the warehouse. In many cases these are the same pieces being featured in magazines and online but up to 80% off.

The trick is to keep a watch at the sites that provide the best gifts and not waste precious time on the ones that are mostly apparel focused. Our top picks include Gilt, RueLaLa, HauteLook and Joss & Main for their constant rotation of gift ideas including dinnerware, knives, candles, high end throws, and silver. These are all invitation only shopping destinations but don't fret because we have your invites, just click through out list here.

More Ways To Save:

  • Buy yourself time. Traditionally wedding gifts can be sent weeks after the ceremony. If you know you'll have the funds then, worry about the gift later and send it on when it materializes.
  • Buy your gifts using a reward program such as MyPoints.
  • Use social media to your advantage. Before buying look up the retailer or company on Facebook or Twitter to see if they have released any codes for followers. Many companies are now using these sites to release special promotional codes that might last only 24 hours. This limited use can mean they never show up on established deal and coupon sites. A great list of recent twitter released codes is: cheaptweet.com .
  • Remember that your gift should be for the couple as a whole. This is why many wedding gifts mimic housewarming gifts. Do not fall into the trap of buying individual gifts. For more in this see our past piece here.
  • If you're newly dating someone and invited to a wedding, work out jointly buying a gift.
  • Try not to waste money on gifts that end up being unwanted or unneeded. If you find yourself really on the fence about what to get the couple maybe you're not that good of friends after all. Try and ask, see what they do already have on their registry or go with a classic in a new form.
  • Be a photog... be the backup photographer for the wedding and mail the prints to the newlyweds as your wedding gifts. This works especially well for Polaroids which are now being more rare and giving a Paparazzi treatment to the new couple. Talk about fun and unexpected. (One photographer suggests asking the couple for permission prior to doing your Paps number and also to keep out of the hired photographers way if there is one... thanks for the caveat.)
  • Skip the entire wedding or the reception and only send gifts.
  • Look for gifts already wrapped or retailers that have free gift wrap. Certain gifts such as candles for instance come already beautifully wrapped. For example D.L. & Co. is known for this.
  • If you have to travel for the wedding see about turning in into a vacation buy adding extra days to your stay and seeing the local attractions. Find deeply discounted luxury stays at JetSetter.
  • Combine giving to charity with giving your wedding gift. Look in our ever updating Give Twice area for gift picks that have the duel purpose of giving back to great causes.

*For those of you who are single, weddings continue to be a great place to meet new people in a traditionally spark inducing setting. You might want to try and go to as many as possible. This might mean doing a little shuffling and even nixing certain things out altogether (now is a great time to stop smoking!) so you can afford everything. See this article on how spending money doing things and on others can make a person happier compared to simply buying things for yourself as further motivation to take advantage of these social events.

Illuminating Summer Nights: Havaleena

Havaleena Light Bouquet LampCraft

As the weather warms and the 4th of July loomed off in the not so far distance I knew a favorite for entertaining needed to be brought out once more... Havaleena's Light Bouquet, $149.00, for a set of 3, found online at Lamp Craft. Single lights can also be found here for around $50. and come with a thoroughly modern wooden base. One could only imagine how swank these would be lined on the sill of a city panoramic window.

Each battery powered light wand illuminates the table with a soft candle light like glow but without the fear or smoke or burns. Something especially important when children are over and running about. Best of all simple paper is the trick to their hue so that red, white and blue are possible with a quick swapping of sheets. Swirled in a clear vase or simply strew about the table, the effect is thoroughly unique and unexpected. Stick a few in your picnic basket when those summer concerts venture into the wee (dark) hours of the night you won't have to fret about stumbling home or give a set at your next beach party invitation and almost guarantee a repeat.

Thoroughly Illuminated : Gail DeLOACH Capiz

Gail DeLOACH

Gail DeLOACH Capiz plates

Last week as our Savvy Gift Finds roundup was being put to rest I noticed an intriguing name at Gilt... Gail DeLOACH. Meandering through the sneak peak offered at the official Gilt Groupe blog I found examples of wine buckets and serving pieces laminated with embossed leather. Swank and classic but nothing incredibly memorable.

Once the actual shopping event opened I was incredibly fascinated by the pieces not previewed: in particular Gail DeLOACH's line of Capiz bowls. There once again, as has been covered (seemingly) so many times before here, is the presence of what I like to call a rare piece of restraint in each dish. Something looking almost as if it was formed by the earth or over thousands of years via osmosis. Is it ancient? Is it from an Egyptian tomb or was is used by a Tibetan monk? All I know is it is indeed gorgeous thanks to an incredible amount of gossamer-esk luminosity which comes from the Capiz—a shell found in the Philippines. Unfortunately this cannot really be detected in the images above. Gilt did an incredible job of highlighting them via their photography which proves that certain pieces need to be seen and felt in person.

While Gail DeLOACH sounds like a mysterious women with incredible design prowess, the name is actually an umbrella for the Los Angeles based wholesale design firm formally (or still) going by Asiaphile Inc. The original name hints at the possible cause for such delicate designs and affinity with water not to mention the Philippine islands. The Capiz bowls start at around $65.

Hable Construction’s Cheery Canvas Modern Totes + Storage

Guest Editor's Pick: reviews by our friends TheFind.com

hableconstruction

I have been a fan of Hable Construction since its inception. Founded by a couple of Texan born design savvy sisters the textile design company was named after their great grandfather’s twentieth century road construction business, Hable Construction.

The Hable Construction of today manufactures hand silk screened canvas textiles created by skilled artisans in their New England factory. Using traditional screen printing methods the result is a collection of modern eye-catching products such as sturdy cotton canvas totes, storage containers, and many other items for use throughout the house. All of the products are of utilitarian function and made unique with Hable Construction's charming modern graphic textiles. On their website you'll find everything from gardening gloves, to aprons, coasters, storage totes, picture frames, as well as a range of canvas totes. I've been on the hunt for some storage vessels for my daughter's playroom as well as some containers for corralling stray magazines in the study and have got my eye on the storage bushels and storage boxes that will be the perfect solution for my summer organization projects.

Editor note—from around $98.00 to $275.00. Find more at TheFind.com including their new home edition blog.

Give Twice: PeaceKeeper : Real Love with Jody Weiss

PeaceKepper Cause-Matics

...what real love is, what real peace looks like, what it means to truly collaborate and how not to engage with abusive people in our lives. —Jody Weiss

PeaceKeeper
Cause-Metics is simply one of the most deep cosmetics companies out there today... traditionally an industry known for being rather superficial, imagine your nail polish or lipstick helping to prevent FGM or domestic violence? These are just a few of the causes founder Jody Weiss hopes to tackle with her Cause-Metics line. After taxes profits from the entire line are donated to various human rights causes along with women's health advocacy groups and, just as soulful, is Jody's basis for the company, "peacekeeping is about looking deeper and finding compassion… its about creating a clear idea of how we want to be treated as women and accepting no less."

Surviving domestic abuse or as she astutely puts it, “micro-wounding—those small wounds to the psyche of silencing, demeaning, ridiculing, blowing off what is important to you, stepping on your dreams..." (the mean people Martha Beck writes about), the good that has blossomed from this is incredibly admirable and inspiring. Just look at the PeaceKeeper Kiss Museum for instance.

Editor Picks

The Visionary Care Package comes pre-wrapped in a natural gift box with PeaceKepper's Wise Lip Paint, Grateful Nail Paint and UNIFEM Lip Gloss tucked inside, $33.00 with S&H free. Also nab a few of their Eco Sensual Lip Balms which make perfect little just because gifts. $3.18.
