About Us
Welcome to my blog! Here is how it all started one day in 2008...
The idea for Gave That grew out of a passion to highlight the positive and bring about a more meaningful mindset about giving.
I read a very inspirational piece in Pink Magazine entitled, "The Psychology of Giving", a conversation with cultural anthropologist Mary Catherine Bateson where she laments how gift giving is a huge challenge today thanks to it becoming more and more routine. This in turn leads to the gifts becoming rather generic and less meaningful.
The question posed to Bateson is, "Do you think we should avoid gift giving?", the classic response by those who claim they do not want to fall victim to commercialism is always yes. Bateson replies, "No, I don't" and goes on to make the astute observation, "Every human society uses gift giving-and, of course, exchanging-to define and sustain relationships. When I give you a present, I'm making a statement about who I am, who you are... and what our relationship is between us".
Not all gifts need to be bought, some don't even have to be physical objects (such as the giving of your time) and as Bateson points out, "not all meaningful gifts have to be new: A beloved book from your shelf may say more than the original pro forma giving".
"I hope to highlight the positive, rewarding and social aspects of giving in all its forms. From honest gift review guides to highlighting gifts that give back to charity, Gave That is a unique lifestyle blog. It's about giving encouragement, love and maintaining meaningful connections."
People sometimes seem afraid to show love and that they actually care today... so in an attempt to help banish this, I wanted to record what I've found, made, given and had a good response from along with the insight of others. In 2009 the site became more of a photo blog documenting daily gifts of life, design & style.
I also enjoy finding items that show stellar design and give back by way of proceeds to charities. Eco friendly, green, fair trade and sourced from environmentally sustainable resources are also a major plus. If you know of any such products, designers, curiosity shops, companies or you are looking to be a sponsor please feel free to leave a comment here or send an e-mail to: marieanakee@gmail.com or tweet @GaveThat .
Thank you for joining me on the delicious road ahead!
Yours,
