Loving Margiela's Gift Bow Cuff Bracelet

Maison Martin Margiela Gift Bow Cuff bracelet This is so up our alley, just look at this Maison Martin Margiela silver gift bow cuff bracelet, which actually looks pretty tame for Margiela. Even better it comes in a matching ring version and is on sale, at the moment, at eLuxury, $285.00 - down from $475.00.

It reminds me of the patent leather pins and hats we covered in the past by Yazbukey.

Bulgari has created two special rings for our 125th year anniversary, of which $60 will go to Save the Children's "Rewrite the Future" campaign. Created in sterling silver they retail for $290.

Are you tired of something major like cancer or hunger? I think we all are and these novel little bracelets created by Dan Hoffman and Carrie Pollare and designed by Joseph Bortoli scream this loud and clear, through the I'm Tired collection. At $10 a piece, $5 from each bracelet is donated to causes you can choose. Created out of recycled tires, they're green too!

Reese Witherspoon has been making the rounds with her new Empowerment bow necklace, $5. for Avon with 100% of profits going to the Avon Empowerment Fund to end violence against women.

I've included them here in the past but I wanted to highlight them again because it's such a great concept. Presents For Purpose is an online store where %10 of items sold there will go to the charity of your choice. Pick from a drop down menu of worthy causes... for instance take a look at their Purpose, Hope & Charity Bracelet, $68., a great BFF gift if I've ever seen one. Dream Catching John Varvatos' Artisan

Jon Varvatos Artisan & artbyshawna Dream Catcher

This is one of those few times where I couldn't care less what the scent is like—just let me give that gorgeous rattan enveloped bottle! John Varvatos' Artisan por homme, $75.00 is described as—a fresh blend of oranges, herbaceous thyme and lavender with base notes of kephalis and other woods—although all I can think is rum runner and how much the scent reminds me of MD Skincare's Botanical Bar with Tea Tree & Aloe. It's rather linear in its orangeness and totally unisex. Right now you can purchase it through the John Varvatos Fragrance website but it should be in Saks and is on Amazon.

To go with Artisans rustic sensibilities, just look at this incredible Dream Catcher piece by Art By Shawna, $75.00. Each one of Shawna's gourds are absolutely breath taking and would make a treasured keepsake for sure. For more be sure to visit her artists website.

Getting Personal: Kim Yarson - Newsboys - Pete Hankinson

New Music: reviews by Dr. M. of The New Eclectic Sound Experience

Satisfied by Kim Yarson - 2008 Recorded in Nashville, TN, Yarson does things her own way as a singer-songwriter. Her music is rooted in folk storytelling but is refreshing in her way of making ordinary experiences seem poetic. Yarson pulls from her experience as a woman of many faces: wife, mother, friend, lover all woven into a seamless tapestry of lyrics which allow you to know her aspirations apart from her music style. Standout cuts include, Expectation Vacation and Butterfly. Having seen Yarson in an acoustic concert, I can say that the polish of a recording studio doesn't outshine her natural ability to communicate effectively with her audience. Check her out at www.kimyarson.com.

Go Newsboys Amazon
GO by the Newsboys - 2006 After long hiatus, this was the result of some productive time off and reflection. The Newsboys have never rocked harder, returning to their roots in serious guitar riffs and gutsy vocals. Frontman, Peter Furler spoke at a press conference which I attended at the Revelation Generation Concert. He mentioned how expensive studio time was back in the day and would find himself writing lyrics to the next track between takes just to fit everything in. Their Go tour, which we caught last summer, has circled the globe with a stage show every bit as techno-stunning as the Backstreet Boys'.
These are musicians who are Christians with something to say but cuts like Shine & Gonna Be Alright can easily crossover to music that has a positive message of hope; not necessarily religious. Its just well done is all. Breakouts from the CD include: Something Beautiful, I am Free and Secret Kingdom. Visit them online at: www.newsboys.com.

Music for Guitar Lovers - Pete Hankinson & The Stringed Edition - 2008 Imagine a band of solid guitar players. Guitars of every size and class. Then you will have The Stringed Edition. Pete Hankinson is perhaps best known for his invention of the Chromatic Watch which uses musical intervals in place of the ordinals on your watch. He's not only a brilliant inventor but a highly skilled musician as can be heard on this CD. They come right out of the chute with a very well done, cool jazz standard, "Watch What Happens" . The mix takes off from there with many side trips to different genres from classical Spanish to a surprising rock lead. If you are a guitar lover, you will definite appreciate the variety of styles represented on this CD. Contact Pete Hankinson direct at (716) 694-1176.

Lapping Up Priceless Gifts

Fish In The Pond
Like seeing everyone again after a long awaited thaw.

Today I had found that some of my journals slipped into a stash of incense. At fist I didn't notice until I started writing and I guess my hands warmed the cover—releasing the most incredible scent. Talk about a moment maker. I have since moved all of my journals and sketch books into the incense cabinet. Hope so much you've found something priceless today as well.

Michael Recchiuti & Creativity Explored

Recchiuti Confections Creativity Explored ll
Creativity Explored I & Creativity Explored ll by Recchiuti

{ A Synesthesia Moment }
I had the great pleasure of meeting Michael Recchiuti a few years ago at the New York Chocolate Show where I sampled some of his incredible works of art (chocolate!) and got the inside dish about chocolate making (read his book Chocolate Obsession because it's that good). For a good while now I've been wanting to blog about Recchiuti Confections because Michael had to be one of the most passionate people I have ever met. That passion comes through his work in the form of Synesthesia inducing confections. Try his Spring Jasmine Tea, Lemon Verbena and Lavender Vanilla to find out what I mean (hint: you'll be eating perfume and loving it).

The reason I'm writing about Recchiuti right now is because they have come out with a very special project that blends fine art with chocolate and a really good cause. A mighty sweet Give Twice moment in the making. When you purchase a gift box of Creativity Explored I &/or Creativity Explored ll, $21., $2 from each sale goes directly to Creativity Explored. Creativity Explored is a San Francisco visual arts center that showcases artists with developmental disabilities. Artists from the center partnered with Recchiuti to create the lovely chocolate designs above. Eating lovely art sounds delicious to me!

Added: the Creativity Explored III is now out, find it here featuring art work by artist Vincent Jackson. I & II now seem sold out. Grab this one while you can.

Toshiko Takaezu & Raku : Rustic Perfectionism

Moon Pot by Toshiko Takaezu
[ Moon Pot by Toshiko Takaezu ]
A few weeks ago I was seen fleeing to the State Museum of New Jersey thinking I was going to see one of my all time favorite potters (next to Maria Martinez) Toshiko Takaezu. A fixture in the somewhat limited New Jersey art scene, Toshiko's work embodies so much of the rustic perfectionism that beguiles ones senses. In that way she might be seen in a similar vain with Alexander Calder and Jackson Pollock—obsessively paddling her Raku pieces into existence yet managing to hold back enough to create something that looks as if it had been made purely by nature. Helped along by some passing bird or bat overhead ala Pollock.

Sadly, once at the museum I was told Toshiko's exhibit had been cancelled due to a complicated set of events and should be rescheduled for the Fall. How disappointing but I did drool over a Deborah Butterfield in all its rusted, equine glory and yet another example of that delicious aesthetic. Still I wanted to share with you some of the amazing pieces of Raku I found while soothing myself on etsy after the whole debacle:

Raku Pots

Pieces using the Raku firing technique by etsy sellers: 1st row) Ron Mello Studio, 2nd row) Marianne Stebenne, Artyard Studio, Mud Stuffing

Raku Pear by FryrPottery
Raku Pear by Frye Pottery

For those of you in Michigan, Toshiko will be at the Cranbrook Art Museum ending this March 15th 2009 and in Portland at the Museum of Contemporary Craft this February 5 through July 12, 2009. For everyone else I highly recommend one of the few documenturies on Toshiki, "Toshiko Takaezu: Portrait Of An Artist" on DVD. It's exceptional and shows the Raku process along with how Toshiko creates her emense rattling pots.

5 Wedding Gifts You Need To Use Now

Cuisinart at ShopStyle
It's there somewhere...

When you read about Puff Daddy Sean Combs and the House of Windsor having to make cutbacks you know you've got to get smart too. The thing is cutbacks don't have to rob you of every little joy in your life. Now in fact is the time to start savoring and using those wedding gifts because they're starting to actually feel like, well... gifts.

Use what you've got and you won't need what you've not! -Phileas Fogg
Chances are you have some pretty nifty, yet overlooked, wedding gifts that can do wonders for your life right now... all the while saving you money. Heck, I've never been married and I have them so let's get going:

The Gifts You Need To Take out Of Mothballs Right Now

Espresso Maker - Save $1,000.
I don't know about your local coffee shop but the ones that are around me hire dancers, Broadway actor hopefuls and designers to be their barista's. None of them went to any sort of school and have confided in me how easy of a job it is. So I figure if they can do it, so can I. Recently Cosmopolitan magazine reported that you can save over $1,000. a year by making your own coffee creations at home. Now is the time to dig out that new-in-box espresso maker and get it working. Even better buy Starbucks coffee (or another specially house brand) and check out Target for flavored syrups (in coffee section) so your coffee mimics the pricey daily fix.

Crockpot (Slow Cooker) - Cut Food Costs By 50%
Recently the web has been ablaze with people searching for slow cooker recipes, information and reviews. All for good reason as many are starting to discover what a disadvantage not having a kitchen in that cold water flat really is. One survey estimates that many Americans spend around 47% of their food budget eating out. Cooking at home is, in most cases, going to be far more economical and a way to put that percentage back into your pocket. Even better, a slow cooker is like having a kitchen built into one little machine. My favorite model? The original Crockpot brand with digital display is by far one of the best and most reliable. We've made everything from incredibly tender pot roast to enchiladas and any soap or strew you can imagine. With the slow cooking nature of the machine you'll be able to set it in the morning and come home to a sumptuous meal and, even better, your chance of burning your dish and wasting food is pretty low.

Candles - Saves Your Sense Of Luxury
Energy bills can have a real drain on your monthly budget and until the sun starts shinning well into 9 o'clock it can be hard to make significant cutbacks in this area. Start digging around for all of those decorative candles you were gifted and start using them pronto. The effect will be two fold. One they'll make you feel like you're splurging even in a little way. That's why upscale restaurants, hotels, spas lay out all those tea lights. The other benefit is the cut back on your energy bill. Every little bit can help. Especially during long baths, dinners together and watching movies on the couch. They're also perfect during parties and for dimming the lights on any imperfections in your decor. Just make sure they don't have lead hiding in them [learn more in our past piece, Do Your Candles Have Lead In Them?].

Pinini Sandwich Maker - Save $7+ per Day
You might feel a little old to be seen bringing a cheese or peanut butter sandwich with you to work but how about one of those crunchy, toasted Pinini's? The combination of ingredients is almost limitless and the luxe factor is certainly there. They also make your lunch totally portable and, depending on how you make them, they can be a healthy alternative to fast food which usually encourages you to buy extras like soda and fries.

Cloth Napkins - Save $17.+ per Month
Not only are cloth napkins picking up endorsements from the green set but they can help cut into your paper towel and napkin bills big time. Napkins are quite often one of those gifts people nowadays feel are too good to use everyday. To this, I say, you're worth it! Get then out and start using them for everyday meals. And if you're concerned about germs and how clean they are, every few days place them in the microwave (with a glass of water) for 60 seconds and they'll be totally germ free.

For everyone that isn't married and is sans these popular wedding gifts never fear! Most newlyweds find themselves blissfully possessing duplicate gifts making all of the above frequent returns and yard sale steals.

Spring & Your Skin (Skin Cancer)

Public Service Announcement

Every spring I like to send out a personal plea to please check yourself and your spots.

Did you know what many new cases of skin cancer are discovered in the spring months? Really these problem spots have been around all along but it isn't until the weather starts to chance and become warmer that many people start to pay more attention to their skin.

This year I would really like to get an early start and encourage everyone to check yourself for any new or changing concerns. For more information be sure to visit the Skin Cancer Foundations website at: skincancer.org. Unfortunately, unlike last year, I'm not seeing the important free skin cancer clinics being held around the country. My hope is this will change once it is spring and Skin Cancer awareness months (which is May). In the mean time you can use the handy skin cancer tool above. It's not a replacement for a proper examination but I really like how it demonstrates the basics to self examination.

A Few Notes:

  • Skin cancer is not only for the seniors of the world. Early onset skin cancer is sadly becoming more common and is quite often is more invasive. Mine started forming when I was 15 years old, so do not let being too young stop you from exterminating your spots and seeking professional care.
  • The more beauty marks, moles and freckles you havethe higher your risk for skin cancer. The same is true if you have a family history of skin cancer.
  • Now is a good time to go through all your bottles of sunblock and to acquire new ones. Sunblock needs to be used everyday and all throughout the year. A good trick is to use hand creams, washes and makeup with SPF built in along with your sunblock products so that you help prevent the risk of being totally unprotected.
  • Ignore any and all advice that you need to work up a tan or be glowing. Be you! Be your own natural color!

HINT:
A way to save is to keep an eye on a designers actual website. Many are now using their own websites to liquidate excess pieces in their private showroom or warehouse. These deeply discounted items can be even cheaper compared to online sales and ebay (which has launched Fashion Vault), so always run a search before grabbing that so called big deal.

Another thing to remember is all mighty amazon.com will frequently run discounts that rival online sample sale deals and provides free S&H. Many of the online sample sale sites charge a flat fee of $8 to $12 per order. This makes it important to open another browser with amazon while shopping so you can quickly compare deals when sample sales launch.

Be sure to bookmark this page as I update this directory with the latest secret sites to hit the web along with amazing special offers and coupon codes as they are vetted. Only sites I feel provide quality merchandise and customer service have made it on this list.
